Relaxing Springtime Skin Care Routines

I don’t know about you but preparing my skin for summer means I need to start now. After the stress that dry winter weather brings, along with (quite honestly) the stress of the last year or so, I believe our skin needs some tender loving care before we start getting out and exposing our skin to summer sun. So to make sure a skin care routine is focused on care and recovery it is important to consciously schedule in skincare self-care and relaxation. Here are some tips for you to do just that!

Cleanse in Two Layers

Before any soothing and relaxing skin care routine, make sure you start with a clean canvas. If you are wearing any makeup, gently remove it with your makeup remover. This will allow your next step to cleanse even deeper. Next, use a light exfoliator or a microfiber cloth paired with your YOUTH® Luminous Gel Oil Cleanser to lift the oil and grime from the day.

Get a Massage

While your skin is still damp, incorporate a little massage into your facial. It will feel great and offers an opportunity to mindfully appreciate your skin. Additionally, a facial massage may help to increase circulation and lymphatic drainage, resulting in less puffy skin.

You can give yourself a massage just using your fingers, or you can also use your favorite facial roller or gua sha tool. The key with the massage is choosing the right massage cream. I personally love using Radiance C+E in combination with Youth Activating Serum. I find this combination works well to provide the right amount of “slickness” that lasts for the massage.

Try Steaming

Heat up some water until hot but not boiling. Pour the water into a bowl and put a few drops of your favorite essential oil, like lavender. Place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl for 5–10 minutes. This process will increase blood flow to your face.

Masking

The importance of relaxing and decompressing after a long day shouldn’t be overlooked. Next time you need a little relaxation, try out a facial mask while enjoying a good book, in a bath, sipping your favorite beverage, etc. I love both the Hydrating Gel Mask and Purifying Clay Mask, and often it is hard to decide which one I want to use on a given evening. So, if you are like me and can’t decide, do both. Use the Purifying Clay Mask on the areas that tend to be more oily and the Hydrating Gel Mask on the areas that need more moisture.

Toning and Moisturizing

A general rule of thumb is to layer your toner and moisturizers by starting with the product that is thinnest or more liquid, then increasing in product thickness. While you apply the first layer, lightly massage it into the skin before adding any additional product. Start with your Perfecting Skin Toner as the first layer. Then build with your favorite YOUTH® moisturizer and serum combination. With each layer, you want the previous product to be absorbed almost completely. Don’t rush it and use your favorite facial roller in between layers to cool and de-puff your face and neck.

You don’t need a spa to give yourself an indulgent facial treatment. You deserve to relax, and your skin deserves to be appreciated. Just taking 15 minutes for a soothing skin care routine will be sure to leave you refreshed and start getting your skin prepared for summer.

Q: How is this skin care line different from others in the market?

Q: Can you tell us about the Skin Age Index and why it was important for the development of YOUTH?

We wanted a very scientific and objective way to measure the effect of YOUTH on the age and appearance of the skin. This is what led us to the newly developed Skin Age Index. The Skin Age Index was clinically developed by world class skin experts in conjunction with Dermatologists at a 3^rd party clinical research laboratory. They studied the skin of over 100 women in their 20’s through 60’s and determined the 10 key skin attributes that change the most as we age. From this research, they were able to develop a novel way to calculate the age of your skin’s appearance based on the presence or absence of these 10 key attributes. This is what we call the Skin Age Index, which was interesting to us for two reasons: First, it was a breakthrough in how you objectively measure the age and appearance of skin with actual clinical data that has never been used before. Secondly, it provided us a way to measure whether YOUTH could actually shift the appearance of women’s skin back to a younger age.

Our YOUTH Advanced Anti-aging Regimen was tested by an independent 3^rd party clinical testing laboratory. 60 women had their Skin Age Index measured before they started using our YOUTH products. They used our Advanced Anti-aging regimen twice per day as directed and had their Skin Age Index measured again after using YOUTH. The results were remarkable. Women started to show significant improvements in their skin as early as 1 week. 100% of women in the study showed a measurable improvement in their Skin Age Index by 4 weeks, meaning they had younger looking skin based on clinical data! And with continued use, two-thirds of women actually shifted their skin age into a younger decade!

A first look: my experience with Meology

I am thrilled to be working with Shaklee to launch the revolutionary personalized nutrition system: Meology.^TM.

So the first step of the process is to take the Meology Assessment. This is based on an incredibly powerful algorithm that provides recommendation unique to your needs and lifestyle. Once you fill out the assessment, the results page provides recommendations of the supplements you need in the order of importance.

I took the assessment a couple weeks ago. Based on the information I provided, Shaklee recommended many of the same supplements I have been using for years, but also a few new ones. All of this was based on what my lifestyle is, what my health goals are, what my doctor is recommending for my age, and the fact that there is heart disease in my family.

I am passionate about education, so I especially loved that it explained the reasons behind each recommendation and gave me the supplement recommendation in order of importance. For example, my first recommendation in my Essentials plan was the Vita Lea Gold and they explained that was to support my goal of healthy weight, healthy aging, stress management and to get the boost that my doctor recommends! I had no idea that Vita- Lea Gold did all that!

It also recommended I take Vita D3, Omegaguard, Mindworks, and Vivix, which all help support a healthy brain, healthy heart and healthy aging.

Finally, there was another group of supplements in Essentials Plus that I added on for healthy bones and in case I don’t eat enough veggies in a day. So, I decided on both packs Essentials and Essentials plus because I wanted all the goodies. You don’t have to purchase both the packs! But since I have been taking all of this for a very long time in individual bottles, it made sense for me.

I love that it is saving me from throwing away a lot of plastic bottles. There are still a few products outside of what the assessment recommends that I am continuing to use like Alfalfa…too many pills to make it in the sachet. And I also will continue to use Joint Health and Pain Relief complex even though that wasn’t recommended for me, as I know how important those products are for easing my joints and muscles as I work out a lot.

My Story: From Actress to Entrepreneur

I would have never in a million years thought that I was someone who would run a successful business, let alone a business that would thrive during a pandemic.

I have been reflecting a lot over the last few months, and I wanted to share my story with you. As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I can lean back on the 60+ years of Shaklee’s science and history of product innovation. All I have to do is share the good news.

So that is what I am doing. Sharing this good news with you.

As a young West Texas girl, I earned a degree in theater and performed as a stage actress from the time I was around 16 years old to my late 30s. During the 1980s, Dallas was known as the “Third Coast.” I did commercials, voice overs, and industry films all the while teaching acting at the prestigious KD studios. I was never drawn to working in the corporate world as I loved the freedom of the arts and my profession. I certainly never considered myself an entrepreneur or someone who would own their own business.

All this changed in 1994 when I started my journey with Shaklee. I began with a very simple decision: I switched from existing brands to healthier Shaklee products for my body and my home. I had incredible health results doing that, and then I helped others make the shift.

It was as simple as teaching people how to build a healthier lifestyle. Once I did that, I helped another family do the same thing, and then I did it again and taught others how to share in the process. Building a Shaklee business was simple and flexible. It allowed me to stay home with my young daughter and build a business from home. I have done it full time, part time and even at nap time.

So that’s what I want to share with you. You can also be in business for yourself, but not by yourself.

These days, I work as a coach and mentor to help a team of other dedicated Shaklee leaders grow their businesses. But we aren’t working alone. We are partnering with a company that creates innovative and safe products with a 64+ year track record of success.

The Benefits of Turmeric

I don’t know about you but since Shaklee launched it’s new Turmeric Boost product I am learning more and more everyday about one of the most popular and powerful roots on the market. As with many roots, in order to get enough turmeric to deliver benefits, it’s best to get turmeric from a supplement with turmeric extract because extracts typically contain a concentrated amount of the active compound that delivers turmeric’s powerful benefits.

What is turmeric?

Turmeric is a golden-colored spice that’s part of the ginger family. It has been used for centuries in cooking and for medicinal purposes. In cooking, recipes often call for the powdered form of turmeric, which you can find in the spice aisle, or turmeric root, which looks very similar to ginger root. Turmeric spice is made by grinding the dried turmeric root; you’ve probably used it to make curries, added it to rice, or maybe you’ve even tried to make golden milk. Turmeric is also available in supplemental form; some supplements contain turmeric root, while others contain turmeric extract.

Next, what are curcuminoids? What is curcumin? What is the source of turmeric’s benefits?

Turmeric’s powerful antioxidant properties come from a compound found in the turmeric root called curcumin. Curcumin is one of many active compounds found in turmeric. This family of active compounds is called the curcuminoids. But curcumin is the primary curcuminoid in turmeric and the source of turmeric’s benefits.

What do turmeric supplements contain and how do the ground spice and root differ from supplemental turmeric?

Many turmeric supplements on the market contain turmeric root. Others, however, like Shaklee’s Turmeric Boost contain turmeric extract. Why is this important? Extracts are made by extracting curcumin from the turmeric root. Extracts are standardized to contain concentrated amounts of curcumin, which is what you want because it’s the source of turmeric’s benefits. Each capsule of Turmeric Boost contains 500 mg of turmeric extract standardized to contain 95% curcuminoids, so 95% of the 500 mg of turmeric extract in Turmeric Boost is curcuminoids. In contrast, there is only a very small amount of curcumin in turmeric root; an average turmeric root contains less than 5% curcumin. And the turmeric spice you find at the grocery store is made by grinding the turmeric root, so it is also very low in curcumin, usually less than 3%. As a result, you would have to use a lot of the ground spice or root to get the health benefits of turmeric. To get all the amazing benefits of turmeric, reaching for a turmeric supplement with turmeric extract that’s standardized to a high percentage of curcuminoids is the most efficient way to incorporate turmeric into your diet.

Finally, why does Turmeric Boost contain black pepper?

Because curcumin isn’t absorbed very well, 5 mg of black pepper extract was added to Turmeric Boost. Why? Black pepper enhances absorption and increases bioavailability, which means it helps the body to absorb the curcumin in Turmeric Boost and reach the necessary circulation to deliver its benefits.*

Bottom line:

In order to get all the benefits of turmeric, it’s best to take a supplement so you get a higher concentration of curcuminoids than you can get from simply adding a teaspoon of ground or chopped turmeric to whatever you’re cooking.

How to Get Out of a Rut and Into a New Routine

I have recently started some new exercise habits. I had gotten in a rut rut since Covid as my regular routine of working out at the YMCA wasn’t happening. So I hired a trainer for 30 minutes two days a week on zoom, and I started walking 30 minutes every morning, combining it with listening to a favorite podcast. Walking in the morning has gotten me out of the house early before the heat hits, and paying for the trainer means I will do it. Doing both got me out of the rut I was in of just waiting until it felt safer to go back to the Y.

Nowadays everyone is spending more time at home. And when the days seem to blur together, it’s not too late to break the cycle and start a new habit or routine. Maybe now is the best time to get out of the rut and do something for your physical and mental health. Here are a few practical tips on how you can start.

Find the source of your rut.

Not all ruts are the same, and they come from different places depending on your perspective. There could be goals you want to achieve but are not pursuing. There could be discontentment in particular aspects of your life, whether it is your job, relationships, diet, or fitness. Nail down for yourself what exactly is the source of your rut and you can start addressing it there.

Have a plan and keep it simple.

Most of the time, we get stuck in a rut because we don’t have any direction for getting out of it. This can change when you make a plan of exactly what you want to do. Give yourself a baseline to start on, like video-chatting with a friend at least once a week or incorporating 30 minutes of exercise some time in your week. Whatever it is, keep your plan simple so that you’re able to stick to it and build upon it as time progresses.

Don’t be a perfectionist.

Starting a new routine and keeping to it can be tough, so don’t be discouraged if you have a slow start or deviate from your plan a little bit. Getting into new habits takes time, but getting out of the rut makes it worth it. Remember the source of your rut, the plan that you made, and the reasons why this new routine is good for you.

Change things up.

Starting a new routine doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do the same thing all the time! Change it up every now and then. If your goal is to have more exercise, try taking your workouts outdoors. If you want to read more, try a new genre. If you enjoy hiking, find a place you haven’t visited before. Be creative with your routine so that it always feels new.

Keep up the momentum.

After you’ve established one new routine for yourself, you don’t have to stop there. When you get yourself out of the rut, the hardest part is already done. Now you can explore other goals and aspirations you have for yourself.

About Muscadine Grapes

Muscadines are one of nature’s rarest, most potent grapes native to North Carolina and other parts of the southeastern region of the US. These large, thick-skinned, and seeded grapes grow in small, loose clusters but are often harvested individually. Muscadines have a unique polyphenol profile that allows them to survive in harsh environments with extra protection against bacteria, fungus, yeast, drought, excess moisture, and temperature extremes.

The Benefits of Muscadines

Unlike other grapes, muscadine grapes have high concentrations of ellagic acid and ellagitannins.
