Collagen can be added to many things, like smoothies, dips, yogurt breakfast bowls, overnight oats, and so much more! But if you are a purest like my husband you might want to choose to add it to a coffee that is as good for you as the Collagen 9. If you are looking for a coffee with low acidity and without the mold, mycotoxins or pesticides check out our good friend Lauren Nitschke healthy coffee here. This is a healthy coffee choice that Alan loves that pairs well with Shaklee Collagen 9!

But why add Collagen to anything really? Well Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body since it’s the key building block of tissues found throughout your whole body. These are called connective tissues. Our connective tissues support, protect, and give structure to tissues and organs like skin, bones, joints, etc. Connective tissues don’t just play a structural role; they also help move nutrients and other substances as needed and repair damaged tissue. (1) Unfortunately, as we age our connective tissues break down, so boosting collagen in your diet is a great way to ensure you are rebuilding these essential tissues to keep your body strong, youthful, and healthy. (2, 3, 4, 5)

So go ahead and add that collagen to your favorite drink or everyday smoothie recipe. Adding collagen will make it extra creamy and smooth and boost the thickness. This means a normal smoothie becomes a thick, delicious milkshake with collagen added. But if that’s not what you are looking for, you can add a little more of your base liquid and your favorite shake recipe will be just like normal.

Here are some tips to make a great protein shake with coffee every time.

Chill your coffee or espresso. Protein powders can tend to clump when mixed with hot liquid. If you’re in a pinch and don’t have chilled coffee, then mix your coffee with your cold milk before adding the protein.

But what if you only drink hot coffee? Then you want to add your protein powder slowly and stir rapidly. A great tool for this is a handheld milk frother.

To mix your coffee and protein into a delicious frappé, use a blender that is powerful enough to chop ice. Add the ice first and partially chop, then add your milk and continue blending until smooth. Only after the milk and ice are smooth do you add the protein powder and your fixings.

And for coffee lovers the easiest way is to stir it right into that morning cup of joe!

Radically change the way you feel by resetting your weight and health with Prove It Challenge.

We have so many people in our group who have had fabulous experiences with the Prove It Challenge. In just 30 days, they feel HEALTHIER, more ENERGIZED, more FOCUSED, and ready to take on anything life throws their way The Prove It Challenge Includes your choice of 2 Life Shake, 1 Vitalizer, Free 7-Day Healthy Cleanse.

All you do is cleanse for 7 days, then on the 8th day add one shake a day and continue to eat healthily for the next few months. People in the clinical study lost an average of 6.8 lbs and 1 1/2 inches in the first 7 days of the program. And when you add the shakes on the 8th day, you can sustain this loss and continue to build muscle.

Here are some great ideas from Sarah Scherer, two-time Olympic Summer Games competitor and dietitian/nutritionist for the Shaklee Pure Performance Team athletes.

Some prepping tips to get you started:

To save time, you can “batch” steam and portion vegetables and smoothie ingredients all at once and store in individually portioned containers. “Batch,” as the name implies, is preparing and cooking many meals’ worth of ingredients all at once. Add any additional vegetables or fruit to your containers and refrigerate or freeze together for each individual Life Shake recipe. Freeze if you want to use the ingredients in a few days to reduce oxidation. Take your portioned smoothie ingredients out of the freezer and place into the fridge for a few hours before you plan to blend.

Another time-saving option is to purée vegetables and fruit and freeze in ice cube trays. Using a high-powered blender, you can add the ice cubes of vegetables and fruit into the blender, add other ingredients, and blend. If you don’t have a high-powered blender, take the portion of cubes out of the freezer to let them thaw a little before blending.

Don’t like bananas? Swap out banana with jicama, carrots, pears, apples, or cooked sweet potato for a sweet and nutritious boost.

What can boost the creamy texture without adding cream? Cauliflower, broccoli, banana, avocado, sweet potato, pumpkin, even butternut squash. If you are having a hard time making your vegetables creamy, cook them a little longer. They should be soft without any “bite.” And to avoid overcooking your vegetables, cook them in uniform pieces and test multiple pieces. Blend on low to chop vegetables and then on medium or high to make smooth.

We may have joints throughout our body, but we often don’t realize just how important our joints are until they start to bother us. Joints are the connections between our bones that provide support and help us move. We work our joints every day, which is why it’s important to take care of them and address any pain that comes up. So, let’s talk about why you may have joint pain or discomfort and some tips for relieving your joints.

The Cause of Joint Pain & Discomfort

Joint pain is a common occurrence, especially as you age. Your joints can feel tender or stiff, swell up, or become hard to move. A common cause of joint pain is injury from overexertion, a sprain, or strain on your joints. So if you’re very active or play sports, joint discomfort can come from these activities. Another common cause of joint pain and discomfort is the normal wear and tear of your joints as you age. Your joints consist of bones covered in a cushion of cartilage to protect them. As you age, the cartilage can become thinner or get damaged. So your joint health is dependent on the health of the cartilage surrounding the joints.

How to Relieve Joint Pain & Discomfort

Here are a few ways you can help prevent and/or relieve discomfort in your joints.

Exercise regularly. One of the best ways to keep your joints healthy is to use them! In general, the more active a person stays, the healthier their joints. Any exercise where you are moving your joints works, like walking, running, tennis, etc. If you already have joint issues, try exercises that don’t put additional pressure on the joints, like cycling or swimming.

Build your muscles. Strong muscles support and protect your joints, so it is key to maintain muscle mass as you age. Weight training can help build muscle and protect joints.

Ice your joints. If you overexert your joints, icing them can help with the pain. Try icing them for 15-20 minutes at a time. Repeat every hour as needed.

Eat for your joints. To help keep your joints strong, make sure you have calcium and vitamin D in your diet to help strengthen your bones. Nutrients like omega-3s as well as vitamin C and other antioxidants help support your joints.

If you don’t have these nutrients in your diet, you can get them by supplementing. Supplements are a great way to get natural support for your joints. For example, Advanced Joint Health Complex* can help with joint discomfort as it contains glucosamine to help maintain healthy cartilage and a patented boswellia extract that has been clinically shown to improve joint comfort in as few as five days.*† You can also get a boost in antioxidants with Turmeric Boost, which is standardized to contain 95% curcuminoids, the active compounds found in turmeric that have powerful antioxidant properties. Finally my favorite product to help with joint inflammation is Joint & Muscle Pain Cream which always gives me deep temporary relief from minor pain after walking and workouts.

Let’s keep our joints healthy and moving with the nutrition and care they need!

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

†Boswellia extract in Advanced Joint Health Complex* has been shown in a clinical study to improve joint comfort in as few as five days.

January is almost over and every new year, it’s easy to make resolutions for the next 12 months, but it’s always hard to keep them. This year we’re more motivated than ever to hit “reset” on our health, habits, and lifestyle. While there are many ways you can reset your habits, a lot of them start right when we wake up! Here are a few tips to reset your morning routine to get a healthier start to the day.

Prepare your body to sleep the night before.
Your reset for the day starts the night before by making it easier to sleep well and get up in the morning. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed as it will make your sleep less restful and you could wake up in the middle of the night. Also, try to avoid using mobile devices or computers in bed; the light from the screen and the plug in to your work or social life will make it difficult for your brain to wind down before sleep.

Reset your morning by NOT setting “snooze.”
The snooze button on your alarm clock is that last thing that’ll help you wake up and be productive! To resist the temptation, try putting your clock somewhere in the room where you have to get out of bed to turn off the alarm. It will give you the extra motivation to get up and get going.

Try a morning workout.
A short 10-minute workout in the morning can help you clear your mind and give you energy for the day. If you’re not able to do strenuous exercise, you can do a light stretching routine instead to help relieve muscle tension and limber up. Stretching will also help your circulatory system better deliver nutrients to your muscles so you can tackle those daily activities.

Eat a good breakfast.
If you have a habit of skipping breakfast, it’s time to reset! Eating a good breakfast gives you nutrition and energy for the day. Choose foods that are rich with protein and fiber that will help energize your body. If you need something nutritious but also quick, try having a Life Shake in the morning! And no—drinking just coffee doesn’t count as breakfast.

Be patient with yourself.
Like all good habits, it’ll take some time to make it a routine. Don’t stress if you’re not able to do all of these immediately. With some discipline and patience, you’ll slowly adopt these healthy habits.

This is the year to reset your morning routine with healthy habits. Your body will thank you!

During the winter sipping hot spiced tea or hot cocoa is the classic cold winter evening treat, however I am trying to stay away from sugar these days. Have you ever tried sipping bone broth? It packs a nutritional punch in just 1 cup and is low in calories too. Here are some of the reasons why you should try it and all the ways you can consume it.

Health Benefits of Bone Broth

A great source of collagen

Collagen is a key building block for the cells in our joints, skin, GI tract, and all of our connective tissue. A decrease in our body’s collagen has been linked to the aging process. (1)

Boost of protein

Collagen turns into gelatin when it’s cooked, which provides a great source of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). Gelatin is the substance that gives your bone broth a slight gelatinous texture when refrigerated. But don’t worry, this goes away when it is warm.

Bonus win: Specific amino acids in bone broth have been linked to reducing inflammation, supporting a healthy gut, and our body’s production of collagen. (2, 3, 4)

Micronutrients

Bone broth can be an extra source of vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. If the bones used for the broth contain a portion of bone marrow, the broth will also have iron and some trace minerals—zinc, manganese, and selenium. Since the exact recipe varies in the type of bone, source of bone, and cooking time, the amount of each micronutrient will vary as well.

How to Consume Bone Broth

Use it to hydrate foods.

Bone broth is delicious to rehydrate your pastas, rices, quinoas, and grains. Swap your water for bone broth at a 1:1 ratio. If you added salt to your broth, be sure that you aren’t adding too much additional salt to your grain recipes.

Add it to soups.

Use it just like any type of stock. Bone broth is a fantastic and nutritious base to any soup or stew. For any recipe that calls for “stock,” use bone broth instead.

Incorporate it in sauces.

Using a concentrated bone broth is especially delicious as your base for a sauce. A great example is to use bone broth instead of chicken stock in a velouté.

Sip it on its own.

It’s simple; just drink it warm and enjoy.

Bone Broth Recipe

Making your own broth will take some time, but it is so worth it. Not sure what bones to use? I recommend any bones, marrow, and even connective tissue that come from a healthy animal or fish. If you can find local, organic, or grass-fed options, they will likely result in a more nutritious bone broth.

Browning the bones

Not all recipes agree on this, but I have found that browning/caramelizing the bones results in a much more flavorful broth than using uncooked bones. If the bones you are using are already cooked, then there’s no need to cook them again. Also, I recommend using a few spices, fresh garlic, rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, and the vegetable combination called a mirepoix. Your mirepoix and the garlic should be roasted as well to maximize flavor.

Ingredients:

12 cups filtered water

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

2-4 lbs bones

Mirepoix (all chopped to ¼-inch pieces):

1-2 medium onions, about 8 ounces

1 large carrot, about 4 ounces

2 celery ribs, about 4 ounces

5-6 large garlic cloves

Fresh rosemary

Fresh thyme

Fresh bay leaf

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Fill a pot with the water to boil. Chop the mirepoix to ¼-inch pieces. Roast and caramelize the bones, garlic cloves, and your mirepoix for 30-45 minutes. You want the bones to be a deep brown color.

Once well browned, add the bones, garlic, mirepoix, the tasty brown bits on the roasting pan called fond, spices, and apple cider vinegar to your pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Simmer for at least 8 hours to 24 hours; the longer it cooks, the tastier and more nutritious it will be. Don’t let the broth boil again. Every few hours, check to ensure water is covering your ingredients and skim the top if any foam is visible.

Once done, let cool and remove the bones. Strain your broth through a colander lined with cheesecloth. Store in the fridge for a week, or freeze and it can last up to 6 months.

Whether you sip bone broth on its own or use it in your cooking, be sure that you do try it. It’s an easy and economical recipe to boost your nutrition on a cold winter’s day. Stay warm and healthy all.

We are trying to get in more plant based meals at our house these days. We love high quality beef burgers but we now have them on occasion as they can be upwards of 800 calories. Veggie burgers on the other hand are much more calorie friendly and they are delicious. The recipes below can be a hit even with your meat-loving family members.

Here are three tips for getting started:

Get rid of extra moisture. There is nothing worse when making a perfectly round burger than for it to crumble as you serve it. Squeeze all the extra moisture out of your veggies before you cook them.

Freeze before baking or grilling your burgers. Freezing your shaped burgers for at least 30 minutes helps them stick together when cooking.

Focus on spices and texture. Recreating the texture of a beef burger is a challenge but can be done. To do it, use a combination of textures. For example, mash 90% of your beans (in the BBB recipe below) into a smooth texture and keep 10% as whole bean. This creates a delightful texture.

Here are three of my favorite veggie burger recipes:

Sweet & Savory Veggie Patties (7-Day Cleanse Approved!)

2 patties for 1 serving

Calories: 39, 25 g carbohydrates, 9 g protein, 7 g fat, 174 mg sodium, 73 mg cholesterol, 5 g fiber

Ingredients:

½ cup zucchini, grated and squeezed

2 tablespoons avocado

¼ cup cooked sweet potato

1 scoop Shaklee Organic Greens Booster

Pinch salt, cumin, and smoked paprika

Directions:

Grate a small zucchini until you have ½ cup; then in three portions, lay out the zucchini on a clean towel (or paper towels) and press to squeeze out all possible moisture.

Add the squeezed zucchini, sweet potato, and avocado and mash together. Add the spices and Organic Greens Booster. Once combined, take two pieces of wax paper and form the two veggie burger patties on the paper. Freeze the patty for at least 30 minutes.

Place patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F (191°C) for 15 minutes on each side, 30 minutes total.

BBB (Black Bean Burgers)

Makes 6 burgers

Calories: 179, 25 g carbohydrates, 9 g protein, 7 g fat, 174 mg sodium, 73 mg cholesterol, 5 g fiber

Ingredients:

2 (14-ounce) cans black beans, drained, rinsed, and patted dry

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

¾ cup finely chopped bell pepper (½ of a pepper)

1 cup finely chopped yellow onion (½ of a large onion)

3 garlic cloves, minced

½ cup oat flour

½ cup feta cheese

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Pinch salt + pepper

1 scoop Shaklee Organic Greens Booster (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Spread drained and rinsed beans evenly onto a lined baking sheet. Toast for about 10 minutes.

As the beans are toasting, sauté chopped pepper, onion, and garlic in olive oil over medium heat until peppers and onions are soft, about 5-6 minutes. Be sure to pat with a paper towel to remove the extra moisture.

Combine eggs, oat flour, spices, and Worcestershire sauce in large bowl. Stir, then add the black beans. Mash with a fork into the texture you like. Form into patties and freeze for 30 minutes. While the patties are in the freezer, turn the oven up to 375°F (191°C).

Place patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F (191°C) for 10 minutes on each side, 20 minutes total.

For an alternate twist to the BBB, try this:

Calories: 196, 19 g carbohydrates, 10 g protein, 9 g fat, 155 mg sodium, 103 mg cholesterol, 4 g fiber

Ingredient Changes:

Swap half the black beans for sautéed portobello mushroom (remove the extra moisture)

Swap the feta cheese for ½ cup swiss cheese

Swap the oat flour for bread crumbs (I suggest a low-sodium and whole grain option)

Add an additional egg

Don’t add the bell peppers

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Spread drained and rinsed beans evenly onto a lined baking sheet. Toast for about 10 minutes.

As the beans are toasting, sauté portobello mushrooms to remove the mushrooms’ moisture. Additionally, sauté chopped pepper, onion, and garlic in olive oil over medium heat until peppers and onions are soft, about 5-6 minutes. Be sure to pat all items with a paper towel to remove the extra moisture.

Combine eggs, bread crumbs, spices, and Worcestershire sauce in large bowl. Stir, then add the black beans and mushrooms. Mash with a fork into the texture you like. Form into patties and freeze for 30 minutes. While the patties are in the freezer, turn the oven up to 375°F (191°C).

Place patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F (191°C) for 15 minutes on each side, 30 minutes total.
