Why Gratitude Is Important

One of the things I try and do is keep a gratitude journal.  Even during this challenging year I can look back and see that my journal is full of daily small blessings.    And even while there is so much going on worldwide combined with the new “normal” of staying home, wearing masks and keeping safe, it’s never been a more important time to express gratitude. Giving thanks during tough times is one of the oldest concepts around, but it is rooted in wisdom and tradition for a reason. Here’s a little blurb posted recently that I thought I would share with you on why it’s so  important to express gratitude and how you can start doing it daily.

The Benefits of Gratitude

Nowadays, we express appreciation through virtual “likes,” “thumbs up,” and other emojis. But regardless of the form, expressing gratitude reminds you of the things that you can be thankful for. This can be very helpful during times of difficulty or stress (for example, 2020). But gratitude isn’t a distraction from reality; it is actually an important part of your wellness. Because your body and mind are so closely linked, a positive attitude promotes a better well-being for yourself. Not only that, but gratitude can help you cherish what you have, including the people in your life who are all facing similar trials, big and small. Overall, gratitude can help you see and appreciate the silver lining of this crazy year.

How to Practice Gratitude Daily

  1. Appreciate the little things. Gratitude can come in many forms, and it doesn’t always have to be a huge thing. Be thankful for not needing to commute to work or not having to change out of your pajama bottoms. Appreciate small things like going out for a run or scoring a free delivery deal. You don’t need to leave anything out when you’re practicing gratitude.
  2. Start a gratitude journal. Still looking for hobbies to take up while you’re at home? How about starting a daily journal to record all the things you are thankful for on that day. You’d be surprised what you end up thinking about. A journal can also be helpful if it’s harder for you to think of things off the top of your head.
  3. Show gratitude to other people. If you live with other people, you know how tense things can be now that everyone is home more often! But letting them know you appreciate them goes a long way. Say “thank you” more often. Make dinner or clean up the house for your family. Tell the people in your group video chat that you appreciate them and why. You’ll be amazed by what a little extra gratitude can do for your relationships with others. 

Let’s all take some time to express gratitude today. And as we deal with the challenges of this year together, let’s make it a habit to appreciate what we have every day.
